What is Trojan horse

Trojan horse is class of malware that have the capability of disguising itself as useful application of some sort (e.g. screen savers, scanners, add-ons and plugins). The malware attract the attention of Internet users in this manner and the unsuspecting victim downloads it onto the computer system.

Once downloaded, a Trojan horse can perform lots of damaging and unethical activities such as

  • Install additional software to the user’s computer to generate money or constitute a nuisance by prevent any legitimate activity from being carried out on the system.
  • Do a lot of harm to a computer system by giving backdoor access to hackers and attackers and installing other malware programs.
  • Uploading files from the user computer system
  • Steal data such as password, username and credit card details
  • Spy on the use by watching the user screen
  • Display popups and images on your monitor
  • Damage files; cause in freezing or crashing of the computer system
  • Perform keystroke logging of your computer
  • Shut down legitimate anti-malware and security programs installed on your system
  • Hijack your computer by encrypting the data on your computer, and demanding a ransom in form of money to decrypt them (ransomware)

How can a Computer be infected?

As stated earlier a computer can be infected through downloads of software, file sharing networks, email attachments and some websites. Trojan horse can also get installed by exploiting application vulnerabilities for example through a security hole in a web browser such as the Internet explorer.

How to Remove a Trojan horse

You can usually get rid of a Trojan horse either manually or with the aid of a legitimate antimalware application. The use of an application is faster and easier. It is suggested that the manual option should only be used by competent and knowledgeable computer users.

There times you may not be able to remove this malware easily if you computer has been hijacked and you can’t run a legitimate antimalware program or access the Internet. This may be due to the fact that the malware has changes your LAN setting and rewritten your registry files. In that case you may have to take some actions before using your removal tool.

If the malware has damaged your computer, you may sometimes need to take more drastic steps like reinstalling the operating system or using a service like Reimage.
